Art that explores homelessness

May 31, 2018

HARP are proud to be involved in an art exhibition being held in Southend Town Centre next week that has enabled HARP service users to think differently and express their thoughts and feelings through art and sculpture.

Thanks to funding from Serving the Homeless, HARP have been able to purchase supplies to create sculptures and arrange days out to enable the running of art sessions.  The project has given those involved a chance to ‘think differently’ both creatively, and visually, and to explore their thoughts and feelings without pre-judgement and discrimination. On show will be the works of art created during these sessions and, in particular, sculptures that reflect the individuals personal decisions and choices.

The exhibition starts on Thursday 7th June and is in collaboration with Southend Adult Community College (SACC) who have provided expertise, guidance and support in running the sculpture project. The exhibition will feature art work by people who are homeless or have been homeless in Southend.

Damon Starky, Meaningful Activities Coordinator at HARP said “we are very grateful to local Creative Media Group The Cultural Assembly who have really supported us by providing the exhibition space at Victoria Shopping Centre free of charge for the exhibition, and we would like to invite those that have a genuine interest in the depths and challenges faced by homeless people to join us in this thought provoking exhibition.”

The exhibition can be found at No.3 Chichester Road, Southend On Sea, SS0 8JP and will be open to members of the public at the following times:

Thursday 7th June 10.00am til 4.00pm

Friday 8th June 10.00am til 4.00pm

Saturday 9th June 10.00am til 4.00pm

Monday 11th June 10.00am til 4.00pm

Tuesday 12th June 10.00am til 4.00pm

Wednesday 13th June 10.00am til 4.00pm

With thanks to Serving the Homeless, Southend Adult Community College and The Cultural Assembly who all made this possible.
