Southend Adult Community College's Christmas Shoebox Appeal for the Homeless

Students on the 16-18 year old study programme at Southend Adult Community College have been working hard over the last 6 weeks to plan, design and project manage a fundraising campaign ‘Christmas Shoebox Appeal for the Homeless’. They created a stand where they displayed their research on the work of local homeless charity HARP, and designed a ‘Donation Station’ in the college’s reception area for learners and staff to leave donations for the ‘Christmas Shoebox Appeal.’ One student came up with the thought provoking promotional slogan ‘Want to? Can you? Will You?’ which was displayed around the college.

From the first day, donations started to flow in. The target was to fill 20 boxes each of which would become a Christmas present for a local person that is homeless; but the campaign was so successful that they filled a staggering 50 boxes! They also collected a selection of additional items including food, toiletries and over £30 in donations to help HARP continue to support homeless people to have a heartfelt Christmas.

Everyone involved made a difference but special recognition was given to selected students for their outstanding commitment and support. Lisa Swallow from HARP (pictured above) said “we have been overwhelmed with support this Christmas; the students at Southend Adult Community College have worked so hard to make their project meaningful and personal and their donations will make the world of difference to those that are homeless this Christmas time. Supporting HARP is now easier than ever, to donate £10 to help provide Christmas meals just text XMAS09 £10 to 70070”
